GUIDELINES TO BEING A GOOD LEADER

NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE
Before giving your dog a treat or putting his food bowl down, have him sit*
Before petting your dog, have him sit*
Before opening a door, putting on the leash, or throwing a ball, have him sit*
* you can also use the commands of down, shake, turn around, etc.

LEAD GOING THROUGH DOORWAYS
Teach your dog to wait while you go first through a doorway, down a narrow
hallway, up/down a flight of stairs, or when getting out of the car.

CONTROL PLAYTIME
You should be the one to initiate play.  If your dog brings the toy to you, have
him wait just a minute or two before starting to play.  During play, have your dog
do an occasional sit or stay, or make him give up the toy.  You should also be
the one to end the play session and do so when you have the toy.

CONTROL YOUR PERSONAL SPACE
Do not allow your dog to dictate where you sit and walk.  If he is in your way,
make him move.  Do not allow him on the furniture or in bed with you without
your permission.

WALK AHEAD OF YOUR DOG
When out on walks, your dog should be following you, rather than you following
your dog.  If you want to allow him freedom to explore, give it a name such as
“go sniff”, and use that command to let him know it’s okay to go ahead of you.

INCORPORATE TRAINING INTO YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES
From the time you get up in the morning, until you go to bed at night, you
should be giving your dog directions, having him follow your lead.

TEACH YOUR DOG THE BASIC COMMANDS, AND MORE
Every dog needs to know the basic commands of sit, down, come and stay.
Additional knowledge of words such as off, leave it, wait, drop it, back, etc will
make it much easier for you to communicate and live in harmony with your dog.
Teach him all that you can.
